It's clearly against any biotechnology company's interests to put profits before safety. What's more, no other crops are regulated or tested for safety to the same extent as GM crops. It is not because GM carries more risks but simply because people want additional assurances about new technology.

Which is not to say that the companies do not need to make a profit. The investment needed to develop new GM crops is enormous and the outcome, as for any new product, uncertain when that development starts. So companies must plan for profits to compensate and reward their investment and risk otherwise they might as well put their money in the savings bank and we would never have anything new again.
