London (30.5.08) – It is amazing how great are the fears and how far people will go to escape from their self-generated nightmares.

A Japanese producer of cornstarch is going out of business because the price of corn (maize) is too high and could not be passed on to industry users. And, horror of horrors, the company had difficulty finding non-GM corn so it could not pander to the supposed tastes of Japanese consumers.

Not surprisingly, some companies in Japan are “trying” to use GM corn. Let us hope they are successful in their efforts and that Japanese consumers neither have to do without cornstarch sweetener in their beer and soft drinks nor drop down dead as a result of consuming GM maize – just as 300 million Americans seem to have survived a decade of GM products.
